STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Out with the old, in with the new.
It was a tumultuous 12 months on Staten Island this year, marked by large protests over migrant shelters and continued battles over speed cameras and congestion pricing.
As we close the door on 2023 and look forward to the coming new year, here’s a list of 13 things that we’d like to see in 2024.
A White House race called on Election Night
Joe Biden beat Donald Trump for the presidency in 2020 and the two look to be on a collision course for 2024. Is it too much to ask to have the winner definitively decided on Election Night, without counting delays or court challenges? Cross your fingers for a win so big for one side that there would be no point in challenging it. And once the election is out of the way, can we get some fresh, younger faces to run for president in 2028, please?
No more expansions of the speed camera program

We’d like to see the devices eliminated entirely, but the city is addicted to the revenue. And now the cameras have been deployed in state highway work zones. How long before speed cameras dot the entirety of our state highways? And will the ticket-generating threshold be lowered below the current 10 mph? Get ready, drivers.
