Giancarlo Stanton makes history in Yankees win while Jasson Dominguez thrills fans in home debut

NEW YORK — Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton looked bad again in three of his fourth at-bats Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium, a strikeout swinging in the first, a K looking in the fourth and another swinging whiff in the eighth.

Nothing new there. Big G has had a lot of ugly at-bats in his latest disappointing season, this one in which he’s struggled to keep his batting average above .200.

But Stanton still is dangerous as any hitter in the game. If you make a mistake, he can hit the ball a long way. He’s done it now 400 times.

Stanton became only the 58th player to reach 400 homers in the Yankees’ 5-1 win over Tigers, and it was a big one — a tie-breaking, two-run blast in the sixth inning.

With the score tied 1-1, Stanton came to the plate with a runner on first base and two down. He took an inside pitch from Tigers reliever Jose Cisnero for ball one, then a called strike that evened the game.

Cisnero then threw a hanging slider that was over the plate above the knees, and Stanton crushed it lining a 451-foot liner to left-center field that carried over both the left-field wall and the Yankees bullpen into the first row of the bleachers, where it was caught by a fan with a glove.

Stanton’s 22nd homer of his latest injury-plagued season made him the fourth fastest player to reach the 400-homer club. He did it in 1,520 games.

After crossing home plate, Stanton was greeted in front of the Yankees dugout by Aaron Judge for an arms-up, double hand slap. Anthony Volpe then called time at the plate so that fans could give Stanton a curtain call.

Stanton savored the moment by raising his right arm high with helmet in hand.

Up 3-1 after Stanton’s homer, the Yankees held on to win the opener of a six-game homestand. Their fourth win in a row and seven in eight games has their record back to .500 since Aug. 14. They’re now 69-69 with 24 to play.
