Giants’ Daniel Jones is better than QB who’s rising up mock drafts, expert says

The NFL combine started this week and as April’s draft approaches, there are decisions the Giants have to make regarding their quarterback situation.

So, February is for mock drafts and projections and the question of whether Daniel Jones will remain New York’s quarterback after signing an expensive contract last year. That all includes discussion of the Giants possibly trading up from their No. 6 overall pick to get a top quarterback.

If they can’t or choose not to do that, Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy has been named as a potential option for the Giants with their No. 39 pick. But McCarthy has been rising up in mock drafts recently, and the quarterback might not be available, even if the Giants trade back into the end of the first round.

Either way, ESPN’s Mil Kiper Jr. doesn’t think it would be worth replacing Jones with McCarthy.

“Daniel Jones is going to be a better quarterback [than McCarthy],” Kiper said on ESPN on Tuesday. “Daniel Jones has already shown he can be a winning NFL quarterback, a really good quarterback.

“He needs help … the Giants get more help, stay healthier, get guys healthy, get it together, maintain some consistency and Daniel Jones is the right man for the job.”

Jones, 26, reached a four-year, $160 million extension with the Giants last offseason and he has one year of guaranteed money remaining on his contract.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen backed Jones on Tuesday at the combine.

“I have faith in Daniel as our starting quarterback,” Schoen said to reporters.

The Giants used their No. 6 overall pick on Jones in 2019.
