Fifty-six days remain until the first round of the NFL draft on April 25. Until then, expect a lot of chatter about what the New York Giants will do with the No. 6 overall pick.
As of now, it appears that general manager Joe Schoen is angling for a quarterback — in any way possible.
“The worst kept secret of the NFL Combine might not just be the Giants’ desire to select a quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft, but their willingness to trade up to go get a quarterback in this year’s draft,” SNY’s Connor Hughes said Friday. “The problem, though, is just is there going to be one for them to go up there and take?”
According to Hughes, USC’s Caleb Williams looks like a lock to be taken No. 1 overall by the Chicago Bears, leaving two of the other top quarterback prospects — UNC’s Drake Maye and LSU Jayden Daniels for the next four picks until the Giants. The issue is that two other QB-needy teams, the Washington Commanders (No. 2) and New England Patriots (No. 3) select before the Giants, meaning Schoen likely will either have to trade up to get one of the top quarterbacks or “pivot,” as Hughes put it, to someone else like LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers.
It just so happens that Nabers told SNY on Friday that he met with the Giants — not unusual as most draft prospects will meet with prospective teams — and that Giants head coach Brian Daboll “really likes” him.
Quarterback Daniel Jones could benefit from a No. 1 wide receiver, which he has lacked since he was drafted No. 6 overall in 2019. In that time, Darius Slayton has four times led the Giants in receiving, with his 770 yards in 2023 being the high. Odell Beckham Jr. was the last Giants receiver to amass 1,000 receiving yards, a feat he accomplished in 2018 (1,052).
