Giants make cheap QB addition, signing Drew Lock after Tyrod Taylor leaves for Jets

The Giants signed a quarterback Tuesday, the second day of free agency.

But the cheap addition — Drew Lock, on a one-year contract worth up to $5 million — changes nothing about the reality that they could still draft a quarterback at No. 6 next month.

And that quarterback — not Lock — would be the long-term replacement for Daniel Jones, who has an escape hatch in his contract after 2024. (It’s essentially a two-year, $82 million deal. And it sure looks like an awful deal so far.)

For now, though, Lock is in the Giants’ quarterback room with Jones and Tommy DeVito, who very clearly is not a legit NFL starter — despite his brief run of success late in 2023.

Lock was a second-round draft pick by the Broncos in 2019. He started 21 games for them over three seasons, but flamed out, showing he is ultimately just backup material.

Lock was in Seattle the past two seasons as Geno Smith’s backup. Lock didn’t play in 2022. He played four games last season, with two starts.

Lock’s career stats are pretty bad — 28 touchdowns, 23 interceptions, and a 79.5 rating. Which is why he was such a cheap signing for the Giants.

If the Giants don’t draft a quarterback high this year, it’s difficult to imagine Lock beating out Jones for the starting job — presuming the Giants even give Lock a chance to do that. (They probably won’t.) Lock is a serviceable backup option. For all of Jones’ flaws, he is better than Lock.

Lock arrives in East Rutherford as last season’s Giants backup quarterback, Tyrod Taylor, heads to the Jets. Taylor got a two-year contract worth up to $18 million — good money for him. The Giants showed interest in Jameis Winston. Yet he signed with Cleveland (one year, $8.7 million).

The Giants are getting Lock for much cheaper than either of those two quarterbacks. But both are better than Lock.

Anyway, a quarterback is very obviously still in the mix for the Giants at No. 6 —…
