Giants sign a quarterback, a former Eagles draft pick

The next time you’re in MetLife Stadium and you see multiple Barkleys on the Giants sideline, you’re not seeing double. Big Blue has added a quarterback with the same surname as their two-time Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley.

The Giants signed quarterback Matt Barkley to the practice squad on Tuesday, according to Mike Garafolo of The NFL Network. The 33-year-old quarterback worked out for the team before Week 7. Now, with Tyrod Taylor sidelined with a rib injury and considered week to week, he joins the team as a third option.

There were other options to target at the position for the Giants, but Barkley’s familiarity with Brian Daboll played in his favor. Barkley, who was drafted in the fourth round by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2014, played three seasons with the Buffalo Bills under Daboll, between 2018-2020, and is familiar with his offensive style.

With the Bills, Barkley appeared in eight games, making just one start. In that time, he posted a 1-0 record and was 53-of-97 passing (54.6 percent) for 788 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions.

For his career, Barkley has a 2-5 record, completing 212-of-363 passes with 11 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.

On Tuesday, the Giants signed Tommy DeVito to the active roster, a day after the news broke that starter Daniel Jones was ready to return from a neck injury that kept him out of the previous three games. DeVito, who grew up in Cedar Grove which is about 10 miles from MetLife Stadium, is an undrafted rookie from Don Bosco Prep. He will serve as Jones’ backup on Sunday.
