STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. —Think you know who and what the world “Googled” the most in 2023? Well, the California-based tech giant just released the answers, and a few may surprise you.
From pop culture, to worldwide news trends, to the loss of beloved figures and directions to destinations, the Google report paints a picture of what people are most interested in year-round.
When it comes to pop culture, apparently, we know a certain blonde singing superstar “All Too Well’’ — greatly reducing our need to search her name.
Instead of pop icon Taylor Swift, Time’s Person of the Year for 2023 who didn’t even show up in the top 5, Google’s top trending person search was for Damar Hamlin, the NFL Buffalo Bills safety who experienced a near-death cardiac arrest on the field during a January NFL game and later completed a much-celebrated comeback.
Actor Jeremy Renner, who survived a serious snowplow accident at the start of 2023, came in at Number 2.
The late Matthew Perry and Tina Turner led U.S. search trends among notable individuals who have passed away. Jerry Springer, Jimmy Buffett and Sinead O’Connor rounded out the top 5.
“Barbie” dominated Google search’s movie trends this year — followed by “Oppenheimer” and Indian thriller “Jawan.” In TV, “The Last of Us,” “Wednesday” and “Ginny and Georgia” were the top three trending shows searched in 2023.
As for news trends, the ongoing Israel-Hamas war topped the list in 2023, Google reports, followed by the submersible that imploded en route to the Titanic crash site in June. The story of the destructive earthquakes in Turkey was the third most-often searched news topic, followed by Hurricane Hilary.
Yoasobi’s “アイドル (Idol)” was Google’s top trending song on search. Jason Aldean’s “Try That in A Small Town” — which was a chart topper after controversy this year, finished in second place and Shakira and Bizarrap’s “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53″ followed. In…
