The Yankees have that dog in them — but not in a good way, according to former Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez.
After another embarrassing loss to the Atlanta Braves Tuesday night, Martinez, who currently works at TBS, ripped his longtime career rival on the postgame show, equating their 2023 downfall to a small, yappy chihuahua.
“It’s just unbelievable,” Martinez said on the TBS broadcast after New York’s 5-0 loss to Atlanta. “It’s hard to watch the Yankees go that way. I remember watching the Yankees early in the season, and when they were going well, they looked so confident. It was like watching a bulldog beat up on a chihuahua when they were playing those teams. And now, they look like the chihuahua to any other team. Especially a good team like the Atlanta Braves. It looks like no match.”
Martinez raises a valid point.

The Yankees are now 60-60 this season — bad enough for last place in the American League East — and have a mere three percent chance to make the playoffs, per Fangraphs. They have a 1-9-3 record in series dating back to July 1, with the one series victory coming against the lowly Kansas City Royals (39-82).
New York wraps up its series against the Braves Wednesday before opening up a three-game set against the Red Sox Friday night.
