Hawk City beer festival on Staten Island’s suds and scenes

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The FerryHawks first beer festival swooped into St. George with 70 beer styles and a balmy November day as the backdrop.

About 250 guests attended the sampling showcase on this Saturday afternoon at the Staten Island University Hospital Community Park.

Tottenville residents and Youtubers Lisa and Chris “The Hobby Guy” Carvano loved their time at the stadium. Chris reported, “It was a great event with a good turnout. They had games on the field for people to play like corn hole to frisbee games and a huge slide for the kids.”

Featured bands were Johnny Fish and Fins, Inglorious Bastards and Our Own Yokos.

Tim Sinatra of Union Beer Distributors said, “We were excited about the opportunity to team up with the Ferryhawks for this festival. Getting to experience beers of this quality, with the New York City skyline and harbor as the backdrop, made for a memorable experience.”

The distributor’s portfolio on display included craft beer originals like Allagash of Portland, Maine, Flying Dog of Frederick, Md., Sierra Nevada of Chico, CA, Southern Tier from Lakewood, N.Y., and Victory of Downington, PA.

Samplings also highlighted sought-after locals like Flagship and Kills Boro, both of Tompkinsville, plus Big Apple brewers Sixpoint, Barrier, Threes, Talea, and Other Half.

Fiddlehead of Shelburne, Vt. and Sloop of East Fishkill, N.Y. were represented, two standouts credited with starting the IPA haze craze.
