Here are the Jets’ realistic options to replace Zach Wilson after another Patriots disaster

It seemed like a really bad idea at the time. It seemed like such a bad idea, that it was hard to believe the Jets would actually go through with it. But as the offseason continued it became clear: coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas were going to ride with Zach Wilson as their backup quarterback, behind Aaron Rodgers, even after the disaster of Wilson’s sophomore season.

Now here we are, heading into Week 4 of the NFL season, and guess what? Turns out the Jets’ decision was a really bad idea.

The defining image of Wilson in 2022 was of him getting booed off the field at MetLife Stadium in front of a national audience with the Jets’ playoff hopes slipping away.

Even the Jets admitted some time to learn would benefit Wilson. Then they made him the backup, who was one snap away from being forced into action if anything happened to their 39-year-old starter. Of course, we all know what happened to Rodgers on the fourth snap of the season.

And so Wilson was forced into action. And somehow he helped the Jets beat the Bills in Week 1 after Rodgers’ devastating injury. But since then, it’s been hard to come by a good moment for Wilson.

On Sunday afternoon, he was booed vociferously early in the game. And the loudest boos came at the end, after the Jets had three opportunities in the final minutes to score a game-winning touchdown and two of those chances finished with Wilson getting sacked for a safety and throwing 10 yards short of the sticks.

It’s was another disaster. And one that was completely preventable because at one point during the offseason there were good backup options available including Jacoby Brissett and Teddy Bridgewater. Hell, the Cardinals even traded for Josh Dobbs in late August. Dobbs helped the Cardinals score 28 points to beat the Cowboys on Sunday.
