McKee/Staten Island Tech, winners of four in a row coming in and riding high since the return of big man Lu Hingston, pounded host Petrides from the opening tap in a statement-making, 70-46 division win over the league leaders Tuesday night in Sunnyside.
In extending its win skein to five games, coach Charlie Donohue’s squad climbed above the coveted .500 mark in the SI PSAL AAA at 6-5, while upping its overall record to 11-8. The Panthers fell to 8-4 in the division and 13-5 overall and are now a half game behind Port Richmond for the division lead with a week and half to go. PR defeated Eagle Academy, 45-36, Tuesday night.
While Hingston (who missed the team’s first 15 games of the year due to a wrist injury) entered the contest averaging 23.5 ppg. in his first three contests, it was senior Scotty McCormick who took center stage for the Gulls. The cat-quick catalyst buried five first-half three-pointers to spark the visitors opening-half explosion and all but decide the outcome before the intermission.
