HS softball: 7 Staten Islanders earn spots on NYSSCOGS’ All-State teams

Staten Island’s high school softball players were once again well-represented in the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports (NYSSCOGS) All-State selections for the recently completed 2023 season.

The Island, in fact, had seven players land on teams, including six in Class AA and one in Class A.

The highest ranking for an Islander was Smith Cup winner Jordan Felci, who was named to the Class AA second team. Felci, a junior pitcher who led the Mavs to an 18-5 overall record this season, is now a three-time, All-State selection. She was a second-teamer as a freshman and a sixth-teamer a year ago.

CHSAA Archdiocesan and city champion St. Joseph by-the-Sea had two players earn spots on the Class AA sixth team, including senior shortstop Giana Scotti and sophomore pitcher/outfielder Ashley Weisenstein.

The island had three representatives on the Class AA seventh team, including Moore freshman shortstop Leanna Chow, as well as a pair of Tottenville players — senior pitcher Erica Zuckerberg and junior shortstop Rylie Nasso. Zuckerberg, who helped lead the Pirates to their third straight PSAL city title, is the only other repeat selection this season. Last year, she was a Class AA fifth team selection.

Finally, Notre Dame Academy junior left-fielder Olivia Pagano was selected to the Class A sixth team.

Scholars Academy’s Alexa Nolan, who was a thorn in the side to several Island teams during the PSAL playoffs a few week ago, was the only other PSAL player chosen. The junior pitcher was a Class A fifth team selection.
