HS wrestling: Farrell places second in CHSAA Dual Meet Qualifier; Sea takes third

Monsignor Farrell and St. Joseph by-the-Sea finished second and third, respectively, in the CHSAA Dual Meet Qualifier Saturday at Fordham Prep in the Bronx.

Iona Prep captured the meet by topping the Lions, 54-24, in the championship round.

Iona Prep, Farrell and Sea advanced to the CHSAA State Duals Jan. 27-28 at the Lionโ€™s Den in Oakwood.

Saturdayโ€™s meet consisted of teams from the CHSAA NYC League.

Farrell defeated Mount St. Michael, 60-18, in the first round as Rich Purpura (131 pounds), Anthony Taylor (138), Tommy Lambropoulos (152), Ron Varughese (160) and Steve Delia-Leahy (170) recorded pins for the Lions.

In the second round, the Lions faced Island-rival Sea — which beat the Lions two weeks ago for the first time in 30 years — and Farrell steamrolled the Vikings, 55-16, taking 10 of 13 weight classes. Winning by pin for the Lions were Brennan Sprague (101), Jack Borowiec (116), Lucas Tait (131), Jovanni Torres (160), Nick Zadvinskiy (170), JP Deliso (189) and Michael Illuzzi (215).

It is the second time in seven days — following Farrellโ€™s loss to Sea — that the Lions defeated Sea, the last time was at the Staten Island Duals.

โ€œWe are tough to beat when we have our full lineup in,โ€ said Farrell assistant Matt Seitz.
