If approved, new law would allow wine to be sold in NYC supermarkets

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – New Yorkers may soon be able to pluck their favorite bottle of cabernet from a supermarket shelf or add a magnum of merlot to their weekly grocery order. A new bill – which is currently being considered for Senate approval – is aiming to amend the state’s alcoholic beverage control law, allowing the sale of wine at food markets throughout the five boroughs. But NYC liquor store owners are crying foul.

“We only sell two products — wine and liquor,” noted Michael Correra, a Bay Ridge liquor store owner and the executive director of the Metropolitan Package Store Association, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to representing the political and business interests of more than 3,000 liquor stores in New York state.
