Ahead of Opening Day Thursday, the New York Mets are finalizing their bench.
This week, that meant designating Darin Ruf for assignment, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

The Mets acquired Ruf from the San Francisco Giants last season to serve as a dependable right-handed DH, but the 36-year-old did not live up to expectations. He came in a hit .152/.216/.197 in his 28 games with the Mets.
This move leaves room for Tim Locastro to come in and make the Metsโ Opening Day roster. The speedy outfielder was a non-roster invitee to spring training after signing a minor league deal with the Mets in January.
Before joining the Mets, Locastro had a stint with the New York Yankees. He was traded to the Yankees from the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2021, but later that year was claimed off waivers by the Boston Red Sox. Before the 2022 season, however, the Yankees signed him to a one-year major league deal.
