STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Yes, Portobello Cafe is permanently closed. Yes, Nurnberger is no more. No, we’re not going to let the food news get us down. Because restaurant people are happy people … and they’re in the business of making other people happy! So, here’s to looking at the bright side.

1.) Asa Bowl will reopen!
Lights are on, but no one’s home at the recently opened Asa Bowl at 418 Forest Ave., West Brighton. But have no fear — they’re coming back. For better or worse, they’ve got “equipment issues.” So we can count on poke, ramen and teriyaki in the upcoming food forecast.

2.) Yemeni food is coming!
Whoop, there it is — a new restaurant coming to 1816 Hylan Blvd., Dongan Hills. In the former home of Leon, Michael’s Martinis and Meatballs and more comes Yemen Cafe. There are two such spots in Brooklyn with the first established originally in 1986.
Next week, Abdul Elenani plans to open the eatery. He is the founder of Ayat Palestinian restaurant just down the block. Specialties are slow-roasted lamb — estimated cooking time is 22 hours — and fresh bread from a clay-pit oven. Also on the menu are seafood and salads. Elenani says, “It’s a simple concept, but a tasty one.”

3.) East Pacific peeps threw a party at the Mall!
Was it for Mother’s Day or someone’s birthday? What exactly was Sunny Ng celebrating on Thursday, May 11? Well, whatever it was — the food was great with bottomless sushi, lo mein, dumplings and General Tso’s chicken. Plus, there was lots of Sunny and sunshine to go around. This marked the first big gathering since pre-COVID.
