Jets’ great escape vs. Washington proves again: Aaron Rodgers won’t fix everything

The Jets very nearly had one of those “only the Jets” moments on Sunday, when they came within seconds and inches of one of the worst losses in franchise history, just hours after owner Woody Johnson declared the jobs of coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas to be safe.

But they somehow rallied to get a 28-27 win over the Commanders, with Trevor Siemian leading them down the field in the final minute to get Greg Zeurlein in position for the 54-yard game winning field goal with five seconds left.

It was hardly a feel-good win, after the Jets blew a 20-point lead with Washington scoring three straight touchdowns once Jacoby Brissett entered the game late in the third quarter. But the Jets players will take it after a long, frustrating year that saw them get eliminated from playoff contention last week with their sixth loss in seven games.

Why would any owner declare their coach and general manager safe with three games remaining in one of the most disappointing seasons in franchise history? This is a rhetorical question, because there isn’t a good answer for it.

Especially when you’re Johnson, the owner of a Jets franchise that is good at only one thing: proving if there is an opportunity for something to go wrong in the most spectacular and ridiculous way, it will absolutely happen.

This is the team, after all, that landed Aaron Rodgers only to lose him four snaps into the season to a torn Achilles.

So there’s no way to know what Johnson was thinking when he told the New York Post before the game that coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas are safe, despite their record of 16-32 together to that point. But it was surprising that he did it. And it was surprising that the move didn’t fully backfire in the most spectacular manner possible.
