Jets to play Aaron Rodgers vs. Giants in preseason finale | Smart move or too risky?

The Jets start the regular season in just more than three weeks, when they host the Bills on Monday Night Football on Sept. 11 . But Aaron Rodgers will be making his MetLife Stadium debut in a Jets uniform next weekend, with him set to play against the Giants in the preseason finale.

The New York Post first reported the plan to play Rodgers against the Giants.

It will be the first time Rodgers has played in a preseason game since 2018. And itโ€™s his final and only chance to get snaps with his new teammates and build chemistry with the offensive line in front of him in a game setting.

But it also comes with some risk, because if anything happens to Rodgers in a meaningless game it will go down as an all-time nightmare moment in franchise history. Donโ€™t expect Rodgers to be out there for more than a series or two to build confidence and chemistry. Beyond that would be too risky, but with so many moving pieces and such a tough schedule early in this season, it makes sense to get him an opportunity to build chemistry.

Rodgers said earlier this month he was open to playing in the preseason.

โ€œOh, I donโ€™t care,โ€ Rodgers said after the joint practice against the Panthers. โ€œI havenโ€™t played in a while, and Iโ€™ll be ready either way.

โ€œEarly this month, before the Jets played a preseason game, Rodgers seemed open to it but said that joint practices help sharpen players the way preseason games used to. But that was before both of the Jetsโ€™ joint practice sessions were shortened from two days to one day.

โ€œItโ€™s always an interesting question,โ€ Rodgers said of the preseason. โ€œThe guys asked me whenโ€™s the last time I played in the preseason, and I had a hard time actually pinpointing that. With these new joint practices, those kind of serve as that time although Iโ€™m not getting hit. I wouldnโ€™t mind playing in the preseason. I wouldnโ€™t mind.
