STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — On Monday, Sept. 4, summer comes to an unofficial close as we celebrate Labor Day.
The federal holiday honors and recognizes the American labor movement, and is celebrated on the first Monday in September in the United States to mark the contributions of American workers. In honor of the holiday, many municipal offices and private businesses close for the day.
Here’s a look at what’s open and closed on Monday.
Staten Island Advance: Will not publish
Beaches:
City and federal beaches are open on Labor Day, and will remain open until Sept. 10, 2023.
Sanitation:
If a holiday occurs on your collection day, Monday:
Put your trash or compost items out that same day after 6 p.m. (if in a bin with a secured lid) or after 8 p.m. (if in bags) for collection beginning the next day.
For recycling, put your items out on the evening before your next scheduled recycling collection day after 6 p.m. (if in a bin with a secured lid) or after 9 p.m. (if in bags).
This schedule is subject to change. Residents can check the status of their schedule by visiting 311.nyc.gov.
Banks: Some open
Financial markets: Closed
Government offices:
City — Closed
State — Closed
Federal — Closed
Courts:
Federal — Closed
State — Closed
U.S. Post Office: Closed, no deliveries
United Parcel Service (UPS): Offices closed, no deliveries
FedEx: Closed, no deliveries
City Parking Violations Bureau:
Parking meter regulations are suspended. Alternate side parking rules are also suspended. On major legal holidays, stopping, standing and parking are permitted, except in areas where stopping, standing and parking rules are in effect seven days a week (e.g., “No Standing Anytime”).
Mass transit:
New York City subway and buses, Metro-North Railroad and Staten Island Railway will operate on a Sunday schedule.
Some subway lines never run on weekends.
The Staten Island Ferry will operate on a weekend schedule on Labor Day. The regular schedule resumes at midnight. Schedules may change without notice.
