SMITHTOWN, L.I. – Great Kills manager Harvey Bird Jr. has been preaching one goal for the past two months — a state championship — and his 12 girls responded to their leader’s guidance with a convincing 8-1 victory over upstart Pearl River LL to capture the New York State 11-year-old All-Star Softball Tournament Tuesday at St. James-Smithtown LL.
The District 24 champs dropped their first pool play game and then turned things around, winning five in a row culminating with the title game triumph over PR, which defeated top-seed Central Square in extra innings in the semis.
