LL District 24 12s All-Star Baseball: South Shore’s in the driver’s seat, but rain suspends title game vs. Mid-Island

Thanks to mother nature, Staten Island will have to wait one more day to find out who will be crowned Little League District 24 12s All-Star Baseball Tournament champions for 2023.

Sunday night’s game between Mid-Island and host South Shore was suspended after three innings at Joseph Anthony Verdino Field of Dreams Stadium in Tottenville because of rain with SSLL owning a commanding 6-0 advantage.

Umpires deemed the field close to unplayable when the title game was halted and with rain likely continuing for hours, the contest was stopped and will be continued on Monday beginning at 8 p.m at the same site.

South Shore, which grabbed a second-inning lead on Robert Esposito’s two-run dinger to center, is attempting to complete district play undefeated in all three divisions. After South Shore defeated Mid-Island in the 10s division title game earlier Sunday, the Tottenville loop’s 12s team can complete the sweep and help the league finish 18-0 overall in district play by holding on against M-I.

When the game resumes in the top of the fourth, Mid-Island leadoff hitter Michael Cavallo is scheduled to face SS reliever Anthony Conti. Right-hander Conti is eligible to return to the mound because he threw under 20 pitches on Sunday night.

Of course, there’s always incentive for Staten Island bragging rights, but there’s a bit more at stake in the 12s division this season and for good reason. The team that emerges victorious Monday will be one step closer to earning a spot in the upcoming state tourney (July 23-29), which will be co-hosted by South Shore and Great Kills this season. The South Shore/Mid-Island winner, of course, must first win the Section 3 South crown before worrying about playing in front of their hometown fans.
