Prosecutors in Nebraska have charged a man with murder, burglary and two other charges related to the stabbing death of a Catholic priest, according to the Associated Press.
Authorities say the Rev. Stephen Gutgsell, of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun, was attacked during a break-in at the rectory where he lived next to his small town church, according to the report.
Kierre L. Williams, 43, was charged Tuesday with killing the priest on Sunday morning, the report says.
Williams was arrested inside Gutgsell’s home just minutes after the priest called 911 to report that a man was standing in his kitchen with a knife, and the answering operator heard a struggle over the phone, according to the report.
The AP reported that Gutgsell was rushed to a local hospital, where he died approximately three hours later.
Court documents say the victim was bleeding profusely and yelled “help me” when law enforcement officials arrived, according to the outlet.
