STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A man was recently arrested in Muncie, Indiana, for allegedly attempting to deposit a stolen check worth more than $76,000 in the name of a Staten Islander, according to The Star Press.
Authorities say the man initially identified himself by the name found on the Veterans Affairs compensation check, that of a man from Staten Island and he also had a photo ID card with the very same name, as noted by The Star Press.
When police determined the photo ID card was fake, he allegedly provided a name of a Bronx resident.
“We cannot confirm that to be his real name at this time,” an officer wrote Monday in an affidavit, according to The Star Press.
The Star Press reports that the John Doe was preliminarily charged with two counts of fraud, conspiracy to commit fraud, forgery, identity deception, theft, conspiracy to commit theft, and having a false government ID.
