Man charged in Staten Island murder was arrested in Texas; held without bail

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A Staten Island man charged in a fatal shooting six months ago in Clifton was arrested in Texas, sources said Thursday.

Daniel Battaforyen, 25, faces charges including second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the March 25 homicide in which the victim was found shot in the face. He was remanded without bail Thursday by Justice Alexander Jeong in state Supreme Court, St. George.

Authorities arrested the defendant in Texas where his parents are living. He had worked in security around the time of the slaying, sources said.

Defense attorney Mario Gallucci said Thursday he’s still reviewing the case.

The victim, Quamane Rogers, 26, was a West Brighton resident with a violent past with gang implications, including an arrest for an alleged 2015 dispute in which he and a group targeted an individual thought to be a member of the “OS” crew in New Brighton.

He later pleaded guilty to a shooting in his West Brighton neighborhood that left a 29-year-old man with holes in his intestines.

Rogers was killed months after being paroled in the aforementioned case.

TROUBLED BLOCK

The fatal shooting in Clifton unfolded outside 200 Park Hill Avenue, a location infamous for gang- and drug-related activity over the years.

Sources said Battaforyen, whose current address is in Mariners Harbor, had ties at least at one time to the Park Hill Apartments after his family immigrated from Africa.

In 2020, the defendant was arrested after police allegedly found a gun and cocaine in his car, Advance/SILive.com records show.

A ‘GIFTED ATHLETE’

Growing up, Rogers was a gifted athlete, family of the victim said following his death.

“He loved to play basketball,” recalled his mother. “My son was known throughout his community for being a great basketball player who was a part of many sports teams.”

Said Rogers’ lawyer who handled the case, Louis Gelormino, at the time of his former client’s death:
