If the Mets are in contention come July 30, they’ll have some money to spend.
Andy Martino of SNY reports that the Mets are holding $10-to-15 million for the trade deadline in the case they’re competing for a playoff spot.
The Mets haven’t made a big splash this offseason. Instead, they have been quietly adding depth under the guide of new president of baseball operations David Stearns, who is optimistic about the club’s 2024 campaign.
“We should be competing for a playoff spot,” Stearns said last month on “Mets Hot Stove”, via Martino. “We should be building a team that has the ability to make the playoffs. And that’s certainly the expectation for our team.
“I believe we’ll be able to meet that expectation. And we should have exciting baseball in September and October for our fans to be proud of.”
Under new front office leadership and first-year manager Carlos Mendoza, it will be interesting to see where the Mets are at the end of July, and if they’ll be using that $10-15 million.
