Mets bolster bullpen with veteran southpaw

The Mets are nearing a deal with left-handed reliever Jake Diekman, reports Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Diekman was off to a rough start in 2023 with the White Sox posting a 7.94 ERA and was released by Chicago in May. The Rays picked him up and he posted a 2.18 ERA for Tampa Bay in 50 appearances. His one-year deal came to an end after the 2023 season and he became a free agent.

The 37-year-old is entering the 13th year of his major-league career and has also played with the Phillies, Rangers, Diamondbacks, Royals, Aโ€™s and Red Sox. He has a career 3.82 ERA in 662 games.

The deal comes after Wandy Peralta, who was a Mets target, came off the board Thursday. The former Yankees reliever is signing a four-year deal with the Padres.
