When the time comes for the new Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns to hire a general manager, he should consider Kim Ng.
On Tuesday, Ng, the first female general manager in American professional sports, announced that she was leaving the Marlins front office after three years. Given her connection to New York City – Ng grew up in Queens and served as assistant GM to Yankeesโ Brian Cashman – she should be a top candidate for the Mets, says Joel Sherman of The New York Post.
Thatโs not the only reason for her to be considered. Her knowledge of the NL East, having headed Miami and even leading them to the postseason for the first time since 2020, is another good reason.
Per The Post:
A source told The Post that Ng wanted to expand her baseball operations staff, remove a few executives who remained from Jeterโs reign with whom she did not reach a good working relationship and not have a president of baseball operations installed above her. She left meetings with Sherman believing she would be rejected on all of it.
Ngโs resignation comes almost two years after former Yankees captain Derek Jeter, who hired her, resigned as chief executive of the Marlins, citing philosophical differences between him and the organization.
Ngโs reasoning for leaving Miami is very similar to Jeterโs.
โLast week, [owner] Bruce (Sherman) and I discussed his plan to reshape the Baseball Operations department. In our discussions, it became apparent that we were not completely aligned on what that should look like and I felt it best to step away,โ Ng told Tyler Kepner of The Athletic on Monday. โI wish to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Marlins family and its fans for my time in South Florida.โ
