Two months into David Stearns’ tenure as New York Mets’ president of baseball operations, there have been few signs as to the direction he will take his new team this offseason. And that means, with a year left until free agency, the status of first baseman Pete Alonso remains a major topic of discussion.
Stearns carefully chose his words at his introductory press conference Oct. 2 in saying, “I expect Pete to be the opening day first baseman next year,” meaning, sure, the chances are high that Alonso will be there on Day 1, but also Stearns could not rule out that maybe Alonso won’t be. After all, the Mets, prior to Stearns, had already talked to the Milwaukee Brewers about Alonso, and the Chicago Cubs are interested. The 28-year-old Alonso hit .217, but had 46 home runs, 118 RBI and an .821 OPS last season, further establishing him as one of the premier power hitters in all of baseball.
