Chris ”Mad Dog” Russo called Max Scherzer a “mercenary” in a epic rant this morning on First Take.
Scherzer was sent to the Texas Rangers on Saturday in exchange for Luisangel Acuña, who ranks No.44 on MLB.com’s 2023 prospect rankings. Scherzer signed a three-year, $130 million contract with the New York Mets prior to the 2022 season, but his tenure angered the ESPN personality.

“If there is anybody who represents Mets’ disappointment in the last year and a half more than Max Scherzer, I haven’t seen him,” Russo told viewers. “Last year, he killed them at the end of the year. He lost a game to Atlanta, which would have won a division. Then, he got booed off the mound against San Diego so badly.”
Russo said he has never seen an athlete booed like that before. He was quick to make a few other points: the 39-year-old pitcher was suspended 10 games by MLB this season for using a foreign substance on his hand during a game. He gave up 23 home runs in 100 innings and was banged up at one point.
Russo referred to Scherzer as a mercenary because he has played with four teams since 2015, including the Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals.
His 4.01 ERA is the highest since 2011. Scherzer spoke with the front office before the trade to learn more about the direction of the Mets —this request bothered Russo.
“How about you pitch a little better?” Russo said. “And then maybe they won’t be in this situation where they got to sell everybody off.”
