STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Official Michelin Guide Inspectors move with stealth through the New York City and Westchester dining rooms looking for restaurant diamonds in the rough and promising new chefs. With all that research finally digested, the 2023 Michelin Guide has announced 11 new eateries in its ranks.
None of them are on Staten Island — yet. But there’s hope.
Latest additions to the tome include a diner in Crown Heights, Vietnamese in the East Village and Hong Kong cinema-inspired concepts. With a fusion factor seemingly at the fore of Michelin’s great focus, the borough might not be far off from mention. From hyper-regional Mexican at San Jeronimo’s on Port Richmond Avenue to Armenian fare at Lilya’s Cafe Gourmand in Midland Beach, the “Forgotten Borough” indeed might be ripe for a Michelin mention one day.
As Michelin notes, “New York is dubbed as ‘The Melting Pot of America’ for a reason. Home to over 400 Michelin Guide restaurants (449 to be exact), the choices for where to eat are literally endless.”
For now, Staten Island has a trio of places with Bib Gourmand status (indicating a good value) in the Michelin Guide — Enoteca Maria of St. George, Sagara Food City of Tompkinsville and VINUM of Stapleton. News of their continued titles in the illustrious index is forthcoming. The official announcement for Bib Gourmand comes on Nov. 1.
In the meantime, Richie Holmes of four-month old Metropolis Steak and Seafood feels his place is Michelin-worthy.
He said, “I would hope with the quality — of the steaks, seafood and sides and the amount of top shelf ingredients — Michelin would see that.”
