STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) recently announced the activation of the first OMNY card vending machines in some of the city’s subway stations.
“Tap-and-go is the future of using our subway and bus system,” said MTA President of Construction & Development Jamie Torres-Springer. “Allowing cash-paying customers to easily get and refill OMNY cards is a great addition.”
The machines allow commuters to use cash, credit and debit cards to purchase an OMNY card in order to utilize the contactless fare payment method across the city’s mass transit system. This expansion aims to provide more convenience and flexibility for subway passengers.
“Installing OMNY vending machines in subway stations makes it easier than ever for transit customers to leave MetroCard in the past and embrace the convenience of tapping, especially those who pay with cash to ride,” said NYC Transit President Richard Davey. “Our station agents are trained and ready to support customers who make the switch to OMNY, so they can start tapping.”
As a temporary introductory offer, new OMNY cards are $1, the same price as a new MetroCard. OMNY cards last up to five years, more than three years longer than newly issued MetroCards.
The installation of OMNY vending machines across all 472 subway stations is an ongoing process scheduled to continue until 2024. The initial batch of vending machines is now accessible at the following stations: 86 St and Lexington Ave (4, 5, 6 lines); Atlantic Ave-Barclays Ctr (2, 3, 4, 5, B, D, Q, N, R lines); Bowling Green (4, 5 lines); Fordham Rd (4 line); Fordham Rd (B, D lines) and Junction Blvd (7 line).
Riders can also utilize OMNY on the city’s buses and on the Staten Island Railway.
