STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — MTA officials are on the hunt for whoever can help figure out what’s what when it comes to soiling NYC subway station elevators with urine, according to a report published by The City.
The agency has been in contact with companies that have successfully installed elevator car urine detection systems in large transit systems, airports or institutions, according to a request for information the agency issued last month, the report said.
“The MTA is committed to maintaining a high standard of cleanliness to enhance the customer experience and we look forward to reviewing the information submitted,” spokesperson Meghan Keegan told The City in a statement.
The MTA’s request asks for the systems to be able to differentiate between urine and other smells such as garbage, smoke, food and perfume. The tech would then have to provide an electronic alert to the location where urine has been detected so it can be cleaned up, the report said.
