New York City blanketed in snow for Tuesday a.m. rush; 1-2 inches forecast; speed restrictions on Verrazzano

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island and the rest of New York City is covered in snow for the Tuesday morning rush hour.

A National Weather Service winter weather advisory of mixed precipitation is in effect for the region until 7 p.m.

“These conditions may cause significant travel difficulties,” according to Notify NYC. “Use mass transit if possible.”

Streets and roads are slippery from the snow and ice could begin to form as early as the morning rush hour on our Island, according to AccuWeather.com.

The roadways are wet on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and motorists are advised to drive at a reduced speeds, according to the MTA.

So far, the Staten Island Railway is on schedule, according to the MTA.

Public schools are open and drop off and dismissal are expected to proceed on their usual schedules, according to the city Department of Education (DOT).

The forecast calls for one to two inches of snow to fall on our borough before the storm likely ends on Tuesday afternoon during the evening rush hour, according to AccuWeather.com.

Temperatures are below freezing in the mid-20s at the start of the morning rush hour on our borough. The mercury likely will peak at 33 degrees, just above freezing, according to AccuWeather.com.

Snow could taper off and end on our borough sometime around 4 p.m., according to AccuWeather.com.

The National Weather Service is forecasting additional snow accumulations of up to two inches and a layer of ice up to one tenth of an inch in the region.

Slippery road conditions are possible for both the morning and evening commutes, according to the National Weather Service.

Refreezing on some surfaces is possible late in the afternoon and evening for the region, according to the National Weather Service.
