New York man gets 25-to-life for shooting woman after wrong turn into his driveway

Kevin Monahan, 66, was sentenced to more than 25-years-to-life in prison on Friday for the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old woman who was riding in an SUV that made a wrong turn into his upstate New York driveway, according to the Associated Press.

Monahan was convicted of the second-degree murder of Kaylin Gillis back in January, the Associated Press reports. It was in April 2023 that Gillis was killed while riding in a vehicle attempting to leave after making an accidental turn into Monahanโ€™s rural driveway while in search of a party in the town of Hebron, New York.

The maximum sentence was handed down from the judge following words from Gillisโ€™ father, boyfriend, and best friend; the latter two were in the same vehicle as Gillis at the time of the shooting, as noted by the Associated Press.

In addition to the sentence of 25-years-to-life, the judge also gave Monahan a consecutive sentence of one-and-a-third-to-four years for tampering with physical evidence, according to the report. The Associated Press reports that a sentence for reckless endangerment will be served concurrently.
