STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory that will go into effect Thursday morning and last until Friday night, when forecasters say temperatures will break into the high-90s and conditions will feel even hotter.
A heat advisory is initiated when the heat index — the measure that combines the effects of heat and humidity — is expected to make it feel between 95 degrees to 99 degrees Fahrenheit for two or more consecutive days, or 100 degrees to 104 degrees for any length of time.
Staten Island temperatures are likely to reach highs of 98 degrees and 99 degrees on Thursday and Friday, respectively, according to the National Weather Service. The head index during the advisory could reach 104 degrees.
AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Dombek told the Advance/SILive.com the spate of summer warmth could create the first official heat wave of the year in New York City, marked by temperatures exceeding 90 degrees for three or more consecutive days.
Saturday’s high on Staten Island is forecasted at 93 degrees; however, the timing of thunderstorms expected to roll through the borough could dash the possibility of reaching 90 degrees early this weekend.
When temperatures soar, at-risk individuals, including the very young, older adults and people with underlying conditions, should limit outdoor exposure. People overwhelmed by heat should immediately move to a cooler and shaded location.
New York City residents can call 311 to identify nearby cooling center locations. Officials recommend using air conditioning to stay cool and checking on vulnerable friends, family and neighbors.
In the case of heat stroke, call 911.
