NY Gov. Hochul: Students whose families make up to $125K can apply now for free college tuition in spring 2024

Eligible New York students looking to enter college this upcoming spring can now apply for free college tuition.

Last week, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that the application process for New Yorkโ€™s Excelsior Scholarship is now open to new applicants for the Spring 2024 term.

The Excelsior Scholarship fills a tuition gap after federal and state financial aid โ€” providing the potential for a tuition-free college experience for eligible state residents at City University of New York (CUNY) and State University of New York (SUNY) colleges.

โ€œThe Excelsior Scholarship is a game changer for students across New York State who might not have the financial means to pursue higher education,โ€ Hochul said. โ€œThis program is making college more affordable and accessible for low- and middle-income families, giving them the opportunity to obtain their college degree. By investing in our future workforce, we are investing in our economy and ensuring a strong and prosperous future for all New Yorkers.โ€

The Spring 2024 Excelsior Scholarship application is now open to first-time students entering college this spring and current college students who have never received the Excelsior Scholarship, with the Feb. 2 deadline just over a month away.

Students currently receiving an Excelsior Scholarship do not need to complete this application to receive continued award payments.

To be eligible for a Spring 2024 Excelsior Scholarship award students must:

  • be a resident of NYS and have resided in NYS for 12 continuous months prior to the beginning of the term;
  • be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen;
  • have either graduated from high school in the United States, earned a high school equivalency diploma, or passed a federally approved โ€œAbility to Benefitโ€ test, as defined by the Commissioner of the State Education Department;
  • have a combined federal adjusted gross income of $125,000 or less;
