New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has directed state agencies to prepare for the weekend coastal storm expected to dump several inches of snow across the state.
State agencies are taking precautions in preparing emergency response assets ahead of the encroaching system, set to move into the state late Saturday. The storm is currently expected to unload anywhere between 3 to 8 inches of snow throughout parts of the Southern Tier, Mid-Hudson, Capital, Mohawk Valley, Central New York, and the Finger Lakes Regions, according to the governorโs release.
โAs you go north and west of the city, that is where we are expecting to see the accumulating snowfall, particularly as you go really into the Lower Hudson Valley,โ National Weather Service (NWS) Meteorologist Dominic Ramunni said. โFrom maybe White Plains on north and west, a plowable snowfall is looking more likely there with several inches expected.โ
Before reaching for those skis, note that this is a heavy, wet snow, not the type ideal for hitting the slopes. Combined with expected internal wind gusts of up to 35 mph, these poor conditions can result in downed trees and power outages, as detailed by Ramunni.
NY GOVERNOR MAKES PREPARATION
Concern over these potential threats has prompted Hochul to urge residents to prepare for the storm to come.
โWe are watching an impending coastal weather system moving in this weekend, and in preparation Iโve directed state agencies to mobilize emergency response assets,โ Hochul said. โWe anticipate heavy, wet snowfall across various regions, potentially causing power outages and hazardous travel. I urge New Yorkers to be vigilant. Prepare your households, monitor local forecasts, and plan for the next couple of days as the forecast comes into clearer view. Together, weโll weather the storm.โ
The interior Lower Hudson Valley has been identified by the NWS as an area with a greater than 50% chance of exceeding warning-level snowfall.
