STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — As the joyous season of Christmas draws to a close, the time comes to bid farewell to the centerpiece of our festive homes—the Christmas tree.
For all Staten Island residents the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) will be picking up Christmas trees and wreaths starting from Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, through Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024, should the weather permit it, according to the city Parks Department.
It is important to note that Christmas trees and wreaths are to be collected separately from regular trash and recycling, and their placement at the curb is to be organized for efficient collection routes. While your tree may not be picked up right away, rest assured it will be collected in due course.
Before the collection, please ensure:
1. Remove ALL lights, ornaments, and tinsel.
2. Take off stands from trees and eliminate metal frames and wires from wreaths.
3. Do not wrap them in ANY plastic or place them inside plastic bags.
Place your trees and wreaths at the curb within the specified dates (Jan. 5 – 13) for collection. The collected trees and wreaths undergo processing, where they are composed or chipped, mixed with leaves, and recycled into nutrient-rich compost used for NYC’s parks, institutions, and community gardens.
ARTIFICIAL TREES
If you have an artificial tree, disassemble it to recycle the base and trunk (pole) along with metal, glass, plastic, and cartons on your recycling day. Before placing it at the curb, make sure to remove all lights, ornaments, and tinsel.
Alternatively, if you choose not to recycle, place the artificial tree out with regular garbage on your scheduled collection day.
