STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — City officials announced last March that a Midland Beach park would get a makeover worth more than $6 million, and this past week they said that the project remains on track.
Councilmember David Carr (R-Mid-Island) and Borough President Vito Fossella joined other officials last year to announce the remaking of Midland Playground, which saw its last revamp in the early 1990s, according to Advance/SILive.com records.
On Tuesday, Carr, Fossella and a spokesperson for the city Department of Parks and Recreation confirmed that the project remains on track, despite budget cuts that Mayor Eric Adams has tied to the ongoing migrant crisis.
Carr and a spokesperson for Fossella said Tuesday that they expect the design portion for the new Midland Playground, which sits between Lincoln and Midland avenues, to be done by the end of the year.
“Midland Beach residents can rest assured that this project is moving forward,” the councilmember said. “I was happy to fund this project alongside Borough President Fossella, and I will ensure that Midland Beach gets the new playground they deserve.”
An initial design had been presented to Community Board 2 following a community meeting last May, but needed to be refined because it came into conflict with ongoing flood mitigation efforts in the neighborhood.
A Parks Department spokesperson said there are two projects currently ongoing at the site — one that will repave an area adjacent to the playground with basketball courts, and another that will see new play equipment, swings, a spray shower, water fountains, security lighting and a picnic area brought to the playground.
According to the spokesperson, it is expected that the basketball court repaving will be done “in the near future,” and the city hopes to share a final playground design with the community as soon as possible.
