STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Newly proposed rules aimed at making New York City’s ridershare services cleaner and more accessible could completely change the landscape of Uber and Lyft vehicles in the coming years.
On Wednesday, the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) proposed new rules, dubbed the Green Rides Initiative, which would require all New York City rideshare vehicles to either be zero-emission vehicles or wheelchair accessible vehicles by 2030.
If approved, this would make New York City the first large city in the world to require that its entire fleet be either zero-emission or wheelchair accessible.
“When it comes to driving towards sustainable and inclusive transportation alternatives, New York City isn’t just along for the ride — in fact, we are leading the way,” said Mayor Eric Adams. “By championing the integration of zero-emission vehicles and wheelchair accessible transportation, we are cutting dirty emissions and guaranteeing equitable transportation opportunities for every New Yorker.”
The proposed requirements would be phased in over the course of the next several years, starting with 5% of all ridershare vehicles by 2024.
Those benchmarks would increase on the following schedule:
- 2025: 15% zero-emission or wheelchair accessible vehicles
- 2026: 25% zero-emission or wheelchair accessible vehicles
- 2027: 45% zero-emission or wheelchair accessible vehicles
- 2028: 65% zero-emission or wheelchair accessible vehicles
- 2029: 85% zero-emission or wheelchair accessible vehicles
- 2030: 100% zero-emission or wheelchair accessible vehicles
The TLC will host a virtual hearing on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 10 a.m., to solicit public comments on the proposed rules.
The public hearing will be livestreamed on the TLC’s website. To participate in the public hearing, e-mail [email protected] or call 212-676-1135 by 5:00 p.m. on Sept. 19.
