NYC public school calendar: Key dates for the next 3 academic years

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Whether you prefer to schedule events well in advance or embrace last-minute adventures, having access to the New York City public school calendar allows families to make the most of each academic year.

The first day of public school for the 2023-2024 academic year is quickly approaching. And the New York City Department of Education (DOE) has released the school calendar for the next three years, allowing ample of time to plan vacations, coordinate family activities, and arrange for significant events.

Students can look forward to nearly two dozen days off each year, including religious holidays like Good Friday, Yom Kippur and Eid al-Fitr. There will also be extended week-long breaks for winter recess, mid-winter recess, and spring recess, coinciding with holidays such as Christmas and Passover.

Notably, Diwali is now officially recognized as a New York City public school holiday and will be included in the school calendar.

In addition, special days like Italian Heritage Day, Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ Day, Election Day, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day and Juneteenth will also be observed, providing students with extra time off on these occasions.

2023-2024 school year

The first day of public school for the 2023-2024 academic year is Thursday, Sept. 7, and the last day of school falls on Wednesday, June 26.

Here are important dates to look forward to:

SEPTEMBER 2023

  • Sept. 7 – First day of school
  • Sept. 14 – Evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for elementary schools and Pre-K Centers
  • Sept. 21 – Evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for middle schools and D75 schools
  • Sept. 25 – Schools closed for Yom Kippur
  • Sept. 28 – Evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for high schools, Kโ€“12, and 6โ€“12 schools

OCTOBER 2023

  • Oct. 9 – Schools closed for Italian Heritage/Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ Day

NOVEMBER 2023

  • Nov. 2 – Afternoon and Evening Parent-Teacher Conferences for elementary schools; students in these schools dismissed three hours early
