NYC Sanitation Department picking up leaves on Staten Island on Sunday, Nov. 26

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Make sure your leaves don’t get left behind.

If you’re a Staten Islander with bags of leaves piled up at home, the New York City Sanitation Department will pick them up on Sunday, Nov. 26.

It’s the first of two upcoming fall leaf collection days in the borough.

The leaves should be left at the curb after 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25, for collection the next day.

Homeowners can place leaves in a paper lawn and leaf bag, a clear plastic bag or a labeled bin with a secure lid.

Sanitation collects leaves during the autumn season, with special leaf collections occurring in certain communities, including Staten Island, in November and December.

The next Staten Island leaf collection date is Sunday, Dec. 10.

There’s also another way that you can get rid of your leaves.

Staten Islanders can get free leaf bags and then drop off their leaves at the NYC Compost Project site at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, 1000 Richmond Terrace, Livingston.

Leaf bags are available at the Compost Demo site at Snug Harbor whenever the campus is open, seven days a week, from dawn to dusk, according to the cultural center’s website.

Leaves will be collected on a rolling basis until Jan. 30, 2024. Only leaves in the designated leaf bags will be accepted at Snug Harbor.

Branches and tree limbs collected by homeowners can be discarded as bulk trash and will be picked up by Sanitation on normal non-recycling collection days.

The branches and limbs must be securely bound in bundles measuring 2 feet by 4 feet or smaller. Twine or rope should be used to tie up the bundles of wood.

Leaf and yard waste generated by commercial landscapers cannot be set out for curbside collection. Landscapers must dispose of this waste at a permitted composting facility.
