NYC storm travel advisories: Bridge restrictions, modified Staten Island Ferry service

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Strong Winds and heavy rain continue to batter the New York City area and are expected to continue through the night and possibly into the Wednesday morning commute, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

TRAVEL ADVISORIES

Wind restrictions are already in effect on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge Tuesday night as heavy gusts make getting across the span more difficult than usual. Due to the high winds, there is a ban on empty tractor-trailers and tandem trailers. All other trucks are being directed to use the lower level, the MTA announced.

Due to wind-related Coast Guard restrictions, the Staten Island Ferry will be running on a modified schedule tonight, with hourly service from 11 p.m. until approximately 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Due to a high wind advisory, all tractor-trailers, tandem trailers and empty box trucks are banned from using the Bayonne Bridge.

Both directions of the Outerbridge Crossing have a 35 mph speed restriction in place due to high winds.

Meanwhile, the New York City Emergency Management Department has issued a travel advisory for NYC Ferry Service riders as the storm continues to impact the region with high winds. The service on the St. George route between Manhattan and Staten Island is suspended until further notice and riders are advised to consider alternate routes.

WEATHER ADVISORIES

The National Weather Service has issued several weather advisories for Staten Island and the rest of the five boroughs through tonight.

Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected to occur throughout the city until Wednesday, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

A high wind warning remains in effect through portions of the tri-state area until Wednesday morning, as southeast winds are blowing at around 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 55 to 65 mph expected.
