NYC Weather: Abnormally warm temperatures predicted for Super Bowl weekend

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — If Mother Nature has her way, Superbowl LVIII won’t be the only highlight of the weekend, as temperatures are expected to be “abnormally” warmer, according to Meteorologist William Churchill of the National Weather Service (NWS).

That’s not to say that things aren’t going to look nice on Friday, with partly sunny skies and a high around 49 degrees. Evening temperatures are expected to be mostly cloudy in the low 40s, according to the NWS.

Although there’s the potential for rain come Saturday afternoon, temperatures perk up even further on the day, as they’re expected to reach 55 degrees. Clouds may stick around Saturday night and temperatures will drop down to around 43 degrees.

“Temperatures are going to be about 10 to 20 degrees above normal,” Churchill said. “Those nighttime low temperatures are even more of an anomaly as they’re about 20 to 25 degrees above normal.”

Super Bowl Sunday in the area is expected to be partly sunny with a high of around 52 degrees. There is also the potential for rain Sunday night as temperatures cool down a bit to around 39 degrees.

“Those warmer temperatures could be attributed to a ridge of high pressure,” Churchill said. “Most of that high pressure is currently to the west of the New York City area, which is causing the storms we’re seeing in the southeast.”

“What’s considered the upper low hasn’t been moving very much, but that’s finally going to shift to the east this weekend, which will bring with it that southernly flow you need to get abnormally warmer temperatures,” Churchill said.
