NYPD: 2 police officers injured during wild pursuit of truck that slammed into cars across Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Two police officers suffered minor injuries and multiple cars were damaged Thursday evening when a box truck being pursued by police rammed into several vehicles between New Dorp and Stapleton, authorities said.

The incident began just before 6 p.m. in the vicinity of Bishop Street and Cranford Avenue, a spokesman for the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information said.

According to emergency radio transmissions, a man driving a box truck slammed into into multiple vehicles — including several police cars — before being stopped and taken into custody near Van Duzer and Beach Streets.

The two injured officers were transported in stable condition to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze, the spokesman said.

Greg Montesano, a New Dorp resident, said he watched from his home as the truck pushed its way between a tow truck and other cars parked on Dalton Avenue, before slamming into Montesano’s Nissan SUV, crushing the driver’s side of the car and knocking most of it onto the sidewalk.

This is a developing story. No further information is available at this time, and an investigation remains ongoing, police said.
