STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A vehicle was stolen directly from a residential driveway in Great Kills Friday morning in the latest case of grand larceny auto on Staten Island, according to a spokesman with the NYPD.
The theft took place in the vicinity of Miles Avenue and Daleham Street at around 7:05 a.m., the spokesman said.
According to the NYPD, the stolen vehicle was a white Mercedes-Benz sedan.
The suspects’ vehicle is a white BMW SUV, in which they fled the scene in an unknown direction, the spokesman said.
VEHICLE THEFTS ON STATEN ISLAND
Vehicle theft has plagued Staten Island for some time now, but strides have been made to combat the crime.
Last summer, the NYPD formed a task force aimed at tackling organized criminal rings coming over to the borough from New Jersey. In contacting N.J. officials and establishing a system to exchange intelligence, the group monitored the collected intelligence, and “placed” alerts on specific vehicles, according to Assistant Chief Joseph Gulotta.
“If New Jersey has a stolen car, or if people come here stealing cars, or doing burglaries over there, they input that information into our systems,” Gulotta told the Advance/SILive.com in an exclusive interview in December 2023. “If that vehicle pops here in Staten Island or anywhere in the city, we’re moving. We’re making phone calls to the other boroughs. In Staten Island, if that car comes over, instantly we’re getting on the radio; we’re closing off the bridges, we’re putting mitigation points in places with our Community Response Team in coordination with Highway [Unit].”
While grand larceny auto is down 7.1% citywide compared to this same time last year, Staten Island’s grand larceny auto theft is down 47.4%. By this time last year, the borough had experienced 57 incidents of grand larceny auto, this year has seen 30 cases, as reported by the NYPD’s CompStat database.
