NYPD drones will be patrolling skies Labor Day weekend to deal with noise complaints, 311 calls: Report

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Drones will be patrolling New York City skies this Labor Day weekend, according to NYPD officials.

The department’s drones will respond to noise complaints, non-emergencies and 311 calls before police officers arrive, officials said at a press briefing

“We will be able to determine how many resources we need to send to that location for this weekend,” NYPD Assistant Commissioner Kaz Daughtry said.

Daughtry made the remarks during a press briefing on safety measures for the 56th annual West Indian American Day parade and J’Ouvert festival, the New York Post reported.

The drones will help determine if complaints are worth further investigating and which need to be prioritized, according to the report.

“Now for anyone who thinks they’re gonna come into this community this weekend with bad intentions, we all here stand together and we say not this weekend, nor any other weekends,” NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said.

Similarly, last month, NYPD officials announced plans to start piloting drones over certain crime scenes across the five boroughs, in some cases pairing the technology with the department’s ongoing ShotSpotter technology, according to reports.
