NYPD: Motorcyclist missed curve, hit light pole in fiery fatal crash on Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A 25-year-old man apparently lost control of his motorcycle before it careened into a light pole in a fatal, fiery crash on busy Richmond Avenue in Bulls Head on Tuesday night.

Police responded at about 7:46 p.m. to a 911 call of a vehicle crash on Richmond Avenue in the vicinity of Signs Road, according to a spokswoman for the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.

Video footage captured from the scene shows the emergency response to the accident where the motorcycle apparently caught fire next to a lightpole. Flames are leaping high on the median as cars slowly travel past the crash site at the end of the evening rush hour.

A preliminary investigation by the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad determined that the 25-year-old man was operating at 2020 Yamaha motorcycle when he failed to navigate the curvature of the roadway and struck a lightpole in the center median at that location.

EMS responded and transported the man to Richmond University Medical Center where he later died, according to police.

The investigation continues and no arrests have been made in the single-vehicle crash, the police spokeswoman said.

Identification for the 25-year-old man is pending proper family notification.
