NYPD operation targets illegal truck parking on this busy Staten Island boulevard

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — In the continuation of the NYPD’s citywide crackdown on illegally parked trucks, the NYPD was back out Tuesday night on one of Staten Island’s busiest streets on the East Shore.

Officers patrolled Capodanno Boulevard, towing illegally parked trucks, the NYPD’s 122nd Precinct said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“You spoke and we listened,” the precinct said. “Our Neighborhood Coordination Officers conducted a tow operation on Father Capodanno Boulevard to remove illegally parked Tractor Trailers.”

Illegal truck parking has been a long-standing quality of life issue on Staten Island and around the five boroughs.

In most areas around the city, overnight commercial parking from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. is illegal. However, truckers have long sought quiet blocks around the city to park their rigs and wait for their scheduled delivery times, or try to get some rest amid new federal regulations that went into effect in recent years.

“Illegal tractor trailer parking continues to plague certain residential areas on Staten Island and disturb the quality of life for residents. We often receive constituent complaints about tractor trailers parking where they should not be. We have closely followed the situation for the last two years, and work frequently with the NYPD’s Traffic Enforcement Division to address these complaints,” Borough President Vito Fossella previously told the Advance/SILive.com.

In August 2022, Mayor Eric Adams announced “Operation Heavy Duty,” an increased enforcement effort against illegal truck parking that started in Queens.

The mayor said the city is working to find better options for truckers, pointing to places like the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal and Brooklyn Navy Yard, but said in the meantime that truckers would not be allowed to make parking lots out of residential city streets.
