Once charged in bank break-in bid, Staten Island man now accused of slashing woman, bizarre burglary

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A 50-year-old man was charged with a bizarre series of crimes in Arden Heights that included slashing a woman and being caught red-handed with a cup of gasoline.

Joseph Cotarelo of Myrna Lane was arrested three days after the most recent episode when a woman previously known to him spotted the defendant allegedly removing items from a home on March 1.

She saw the defendant holding a plastic cup filled with diesel fuel that had paper towels protruding from the liquid, according to the complaint. When he was searched by police, officers allege they found two stolen rings and a necklace.
